Veerle Poupeye is an art historian and museum professional specialized in the art, culture and history of the Global Caribbean. She was educated at the Universiteit Gent, Belgium (MA in Art History) and at Emory University, Atlanta (Ph.D. in Art History, Museum Studies and Cultural Studies). She has widely published on subjects related to Caribbean art and culture but her best known book is Caribbean Art (1998, 2022 2nd revised and expanded edition), which is standard reading on the subject. Her past professional associations include the National Gallery of Jamaica, where she served as Executive Director from 2009 to 2018 and previously as a curator, and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, where she lectured until 2022. Dr. Poupeye has also worked as a consultant and her projects included engagements with the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands and the Cayman National Cultural Foundation between 2018 and 2022. She joined the Cayman Islands National Museum as its Director in November 2024.
