EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
On 11 September 2004, Hurricane Ivan approached Grand Cayman, bringing with it some of the most devastating weather conditions in the island’s history. The Category 5 hurricane battered the island with destructive winds, torrential rain and storm surge, leaving widespread damage and thousands of residents displaced.
Opened on 16 September 2024, The Resilience of Grand Cayman: Surviving Hurricane Ivan revisited the events before, during and after the storm. Through historical accounts, powerful facts and stories of recovery, the exhibition documented the destruction caused by Ivan and the extraordinary efforts of residents, emergency services and international partners to rebuild their communities.
The exhibition also highlighted the lessons learned from the disaster and the importance of hurricane preparedness. Two decades after the storm, it reflected on the resilience, solidarity and determination of the Caymanian people, whose collective efforts helped Grand Cayman recover and move forward.
